How to Choose a Fireproof Gun Safe

No gun safe is truly fireproof. What you are buying is time: the number of minutes the inside stays cool enough to protect your firearms, ammunition and papers while a fire burns around it. That is why every fireproof gun safe in this collection lists two numbers, a duration and a test temperature, such as 60 minutes at 1200°F. Compare both. A rating tested at a higher temperature is the tougher test.

The right rating depends on where you live and where the safe sits. A typical house fire burns hotter at the ceiling than at the floor, and firefighters in town usually arrive faster than in the country. For a rural home, a garage or a top floor, we suggest at least 60 minutes. A 30 to 45 minute safe is a reasonable minimum for a ground-floor room in town.

What Else to Check

Door seal. Look for a heat-activated door seal that expands in a fire to block smoke and water. Burglary rating. A UL RSC rating or California DOJ approval means the safe has been tested against a standard attack. Capacity. Advertised gun counts assume unscoped rifles packed tight, so most owners are happier with a safe rated for about twice the guns they own today.

Are all gun safes fireproof?

No. Some gun safes and most gun cabinets have no fire lining at all. Every safe in this collection has a published fire rating; check the product page for the exact time and test temperature.

How long should a fireproof gun safe last in a fire?

For most homes 60 minutes is a good target. Choose 90 minutes or more if you live far from a fire station or plan to put the safe in a garage or upstairs.

Does a fireproof gun safe also protect against water?

Not always. A heat-activated door seal helps keep out smoke and hose water, but only some models carry a separate waterproof rating. Check the product specifications.

Do I need to bolt down a fireproof gun safe?

Yes. Most gun safes come with factory anchor holes, and bolting the safe to the floor is the single best way to stop a thief from tipping it over or carrying it away.
