What Fireproof Safe Ratings Actually Mean

The term "fireproof" is used loosely in retail, but real fire protection comes from specific tested ratings. UL 72 and ETL standards test safes in a furnace at temperatures that simulate residential fires — typically 1,200°F to 1,700°F on the outside — and measure whether the interior stays below the threshold that destroys paper (350°F), digital media (125°F), or magnetic tapes (150°F). A Class 350 rating protects documents. A Class 125 rating is needed for USB drives, external hard drives, and CDs.

Duration matters as much as temperature resistance. A 30-minute fire rating is adequate for a quick-responding fire department in a suburban area. A 1-hour or 2-hour rating gives meaningful protection in rural areas or larger homes where suppression takes longer. Higher-end safes carry both a UL Class 350 and a water resistance certification — critical if sprinkler systems or firefighting efforts flood the area after a fire.

Fireproof safes designed for documents use different construction than gun safes or general security safes. The insulation layer between the inner and outer steel walls is what absorbs heat and releases moisture to keep the interior cool. Thicker insulation means higher ratings but also heavier safes — a 2-hour rated model will weigh significantly more than a 30-minute equivalent of similar size.

Are fireproof safes also waterproof?

Not by default. Fire-rated safes that also carry a water resistance rating (often tested at 8 inches of water for 24 hours) provide meaningful protection against sprinkler systems and firefighting runoff. Look for the water resistance certification specifically — don't assume it based on fire rating alone.

Can a fireproof safe protect guns too?

Yes — many full-size gun safes carry both a fire rating and a burglary rating. If you want to consolidate, look for a rifle safe with a verified fire rating rather than buying two separate safes. Just confirm the fire rating is UL or ETL tested, not a manufacturer estimate.

What should I store in a fireproof safe?

Passports, birth certificates, Social Security cards, wills, property deeds, insurance policies, USB drives with backups, external hard drives, cash, and irreplaceable photos. Firearms benefit more from burglary-rated safes — pair fire protection with security ratings for the best coverage.
