How to Choose the Right Gun Safe

Gun safes vary more than most buyers expect. The difference between a $300 steel cabinet and a $1,500 security safe is not just price — it's gauge thickness, locking bolt count, fire rating, and whether the door can resist a pry bar for more than 30 seconds. Knowing what those specs actually mean is the first step to making a purchase you won't regret.

Start with your primary storage goal. If you're storing long guns alongside handguns and want fire protection, a full-size rifle safe with a UL or ETL fire rating makes sense. If quick access to a single pistol is the priority, a biometric or keypad handgun safe delivers faster response in a much smaller footprint. Combining both is common in households where different family members have different needs.

Security ratings matter too. California DOJ approval and RSC (Residential Security Container) certification tell you the safe met a real test — not just a marketing claim. A gun safe that looks imposing but has thin walls and weak bolts can be defeated quickly. Look for at least 12-gauge steel on the body, 3/16" or better on the door, and active locking bolts on multiple sides.

What size gun safe do I need?

A common rule: buy one size larger than your current collection. Gun collections grow, accessories accumulate, and you'll likely want space for documents and valuables too. If you own 6 guns today, start with a safe rated for 12–16.

Are expensive gun safes worth it?

Yes — for serious security. Budget safes can slow a casual theft, but mid-range and premium models with RSC or UL TL ratings can resist power tools, pry bars, and sustained attacks. The jump from $400 to $900 usually buys you meaningfully better steel and bolt work.

Can I bolt a gun safe to the floor?

Yes, and you should. An unanchored safe can be tilted, dragged, or carried out. Most safes include pre-drilled anchor holes at the base. Bolt into concrete with masonry anchors or into wood framing — not just the subfloor — for maximum hold.
