Understand the protection behind the label.

Learn how to compare safe fire ratings, burglary classifications, and testing claims. Use the full specification to choose protection for documents, firearms, cash, and valuables.

What do safe fire ratings mean?

Read the full test, not just the number of minutes

A fire rating describes performance under specified test conditions. Compare the testing organization, test method, exposure duration, and maximum interior temperature. A longer advertised duration is not automatically better when two products were tested differently.

UL classifications and Intertek-ETL testing both appear in the safe market. Manufacturer tests also exist. Do not describe every fire rating as a UL certification, and do not confuse a UL-listed lock with a fire-rated safe.

Label or specification What to check
UL Class 350 A classification associated with paper-record protection and a 350°F interior temperature limit; confirm the duration on the label.
Media protection Check the exact media types covered and temperature and humidity limits. A paper-rated safe should not be assumed to protect hard drives or other digital media.
ETL or manufacturer fire test Compare the published test conditions and result for the exact model. Matching minutes alone does not establish matching performance.
Water protection Check separately for a water test. Fire resistance does not establish waterproof performance.

What do burglary safe ratings mean?

Classification How to interpret it
B-rate / C-rate Construction descriptions used in the industry; not equivalent to a UL tool-attack certification. Verify the actual steel and construction specification.
RSC Residential Security Container. Check the stated UL attack level rather than treating every RSC as the same rating.
TL-15 / TL-30 Tool-resistant classifications with 15 or 30 minutes of net working attack time under the applicable test. These are not simple elapsed burglary times.
TL-30x6 The x6 designation extends the specified attack testing to all six sides. Confirm the complete label rather than inferring this from TL-30 alone.

The lock, door, body, construction, installation, and site security all matter. The number of locking bolts or safe weight alone cannot establish a burglary rating.

Which rating do I need?

Start with the contents and the risks at the location. For documents, examine fire performance. For valuable cash or jewelry, compare burglary protection and any insurer requirements. For digital backups, look for explicit media protection. Businesses should confirm required specifications with their insurer or applicable authority before ordering.

There is no single minimum rating appropriate for every household or business. Ask us to compare the exact models you are considering.

Common rating questions

Does a fireproof safe guarantee that everything survives?

No. A test rating describes performance under controlled conditions. Actual exposure, contents, installation, damage, and how the safe is used affect the outcome. Keep important digital backups in a separate location as well.

Is every safe from one brand rated the same?

No. Compare the model and series. Fire and burglary ratings, lock options, and construction can differ within American Security, Hollon, Gardall, Hayman, and other brands.
